Private capital comes in many forms, including venture capital, private equity, and direct investments by investors. It is ultimately raised largely from institutional investors (e.g. university endowments, public pension funds, and foundations) or high-net worth individuals. Private capital investments tend to differ from public market investments because of their illiquidity and the intense oversight provided by the investors. Private capital investments are generally five to ten years long and typically have intensive involvement by the investors in the funded companies.
Harvard Business School has had a close relationship with private capital since the industry's inception. The first modern private equity fund, American Research and Development, was designed and led by Professor Georges Doriot in the years after World War II. HBS alumni have continued to dominate the industry.
In the 2018-19 academic year, Harvard Business School is launching a private capital initiative, which will serve as a hub for faculty interested in this topic. One important aspect will be the facilitation of faculty research, where the research data coordinator will play a critical role.
Reporting to HBS faculty members, the Research Associate is responsible for identifying and implementing the available technological solutions for meeting researcher data and processing needs, and serving as the project manager for faculty projects in private capital, ensuring they are appropriately staffed and executed using both internal and external resources. Exhibits a high level of independence, intellectual curiosity, ability to use discretionary judgment, and strong technology skills.
The primary responsibilities of the Research Associate include:
Serves the needs of faculty and researchers engaged in private capital research regarding the use of outside data and resources, identifying and applying computational and statistical tools for multivariate analysis to data-driven explorations of HBS researcher data. Teaches and advises researchers in the use of these computational tools. Works directly with faculty on data projects, including collecting, transferring, merging, managing, and de-identifying data as necessary. Scopes and develops databases and graphic visualization interfaces to display results. Ensures that policies related to the use of data from external sources are adhered to.
Evaluates project resource requirements, identifying and recommending appropriate resources, and assuming responsibility for the management and monitoring of resources once they are assigned to projects. Identifies and clearly communicates deadlines and action items to team members and faculty researchers, and follows up to ensure they are met. Creatively solves problems and alerts leadership of any unforeseen challenges that arise during the project life cycle. Tracks and reports on project milestones and resource utilization to ensure that projects remain on time and on budget. Manages chargebacks to researchers and other HBS units for services. Provides status reports to faculty members, as appropriate. Effectively manages project scope and costs by ensuring changes and decisions are properly approved and documented. Determines how project results will be measured and completes post-project evaluation to determine how well results were achieved.
This a full-time term appointment starting ASAP through June 30, 2019 with likely reappointment. All Research Associate roles at HBS are structured as term appointments with potential for reappointment. Preference for a candidate who is able to commit for at least 2 years.
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, a cover letter and resume are required for full consideration. Upon the review of application materials, applicants may be asked to submit a writing sample, transcript(s), and sample coding.
HBS is not able to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
