The Research Associate (RA) will partner with a faculty member in the Finance Unit on topics central to the faculty's research agenda. The RA will identify and explore a wide-range of questions related to statistical design and analysis, as well as provide subject-area knowledge and interpretation to the faculty member. Topics include but are not limited to, financial intermediaries, corporate finance, banking operations, and private equity.
The RA position reports directly to both the faculty supervisor and an administrative manager in the Research Staff Services office. Ideal RA candidates will be comfortable in an environment that requires a high level of independence, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to use discretionary judgment.
Primary duties:
Under the general direction of a faculty member, the RA will develop, design and conduct research projects; synthesize, analyze, produce statistical models and original written materials; contribute to scholarly research products including, but not limited to, journal articles, working papers, existing cases, and presentations.
Collect, manage, and manipulate data using a variety of tools and sources, including but not limited to Excel, Stata and/or R. Develop, synthesize, and provide analysis of data exhibits for academic journal articles, HBS cases and HBS teaching notes.
Conduct background research, draft new cases, and update existing cases or materials for classroom use. Gather, analyze, edit, and draft all forms of academic writing; produce original written materials.
Independently manage all timelines and deliverables. Exercise independent decision making with regard to progression of research project and methodologies. Must be able to structure assignments and keep faculty member informed as necessary, using own judgment.
Ensure compliance with department, University, and federal regulations. Complete work with only general direction. Be aware of department, School, University policies and potential outside research policies.

This is a half-time term appointment starting as soon as possible (start date flexible) through June 30, 2021. All Research Associate roles at HBS are structured as one-year term appointments with potential for renewal. Half-time positions are benefits-eligible and can be paired to create a full-time role.
