The Office of the Chief Investment Officer (UC Investments) is responsible for managing the University of California's endowment, retirement, working capital, and cash assets under the policies, guidelines, and performance benchmarks established by the Board of Regents.
The UC Investments' team oversees the investment, operations, risk management, performance reporting, and administrative functions of the Office. Senior Investment Analysts are part of the Investments team, which is responsible for producing attractive risk-adjusted returns for UC Investments' portfolios through superior investment selection, portfolio construction, and risk management. The Investments team is organized by asset class, including Public Equities, Fixed Income, Absolute Return, Private Equity, Real Estate, and Real Assets.
The Real Estate program's objective is to provide attractive risk-adjusted returns to UC Investments' portfolios over the long term. The Real Estate team invests in and manages a diversified, global portfolio of commingled real estate funds, co-investments, and direct investments in properties.
As a key member of the Real Estate team, the Senior Investment Analyst will support the evaluation and execution of prospective investment opportunities, including funds, co-investments, and direct investments. This includes assisting in the sourcing, due diligence, and structuring of these investments. The Senior Investment Analyst will also support the ongoing management of the Real Estate portfolio by analyzing investment performance and risks.
In addition, the Senior Investment Analyst will review and assess industry research to help the team monitor portfolio risk and find opportunities that offer attractive risk-adjusted returns.
Finally, the Senior Investment Analyst will prepare and oversee the production of reports and presentations to stakeholders and the UC Investments leadership team, including investment recommendations.
UC Investments has a small team that believes in collaboration. In addition to supporting the Real Estate team, the Senior Investment Analyst will also collaborate with colleagues across UC Investments.
Support the Real Estate team in conducting due diligence of prospective investments from beginning to end.
Be a key contributor to Real Estate team discussions on the merits and risks of an investment decision. Proactively share views and ideas with the Real Estate team for discussion and review.
Develop and maintain a network of peers and industry contacts in order to identify suitable potential investment partners and service providers.
Support the negotiations and structuring process of fund investments, co-investments, and direct investments to optimize outcomes and ensure adherence to UC Investments' policies.
Maintain active involvement with investment partners. This includes participating in onsite meetings and quarterly updates with each partner.
Attend annual and ad hoc meetings on behalf of the Real Estate team, as needed. Be able to speak in depth about each assigned relationship and investment.
Represent UC Investments on Advisory Boards.
Prepare and maintain pipeline reports for the Real Estate team's review and discussion.
Support the Real Estate and Risk teams in monitoring and managing portfolio risks and exposures.
Work with investment partners and leverage industry research to forecast the performance and assess risk of individual investments.
Support the ongoing management of the direct real estate portfolio.
Analyze opportunities to refinance, sell, or invest additional capital in individual properties. Tour properties as needed.
Work with Data and Operations teams to ensure robustness of reporting and analytical infrastructure.
Provide ongoing research coverage of the real estate industry. Stay apprised of industry developments, regulations, or issues that could impact UC Investments' portfolios. Provide ad hoc research and analytical support as needed.
Gather market intelligence and identify industry trends that will support the Real Estate team's investment and portfolio management duties.
Gather and analyze macroeconomic and demographic data, research, and forecasts to support development of investment themes.
Lead projects and assignments, as requested. These projects may include but are not limited to: providing ad hoc performance analysis, creating presentation materials, project management and drafting memos and letters.
Ability to individually produce qualitative and quantitative investment analysis.
Superb oral and written communication skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills and professionalism.
Sound judgment to ask informed and discerning questions both internally and externally to seek desired information or understanding.
Strong intellectual curiosity and ability to develop independent, original viewpoints.

Experience analyzing financial statements, building valuation and operating models, synthesizing large amounts of data, and reviewing the technical work of other team members and external partners.

Investment experience at a direct investment platform, endowment, foundation, pension plan, sovereign wealth fund, family office or related advisory firm or consultancy.
Professional experience in real estate and thorough understanding of the real estate industry.
Knowledge of multiple asset classes.
Required: Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience in investment management, asset management, investment banking, or related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred: MBA/CFA or a specialized professional designation and minimum of 7 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, work for this position is currently performed remotely. However, the selected candidate may be required to report to work in Oakland, CA when onsite operations resume.
